ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s mobile handset manufacturing industry produced 30.21 million units in 2025, underscoring continued growth in local assembly capacity, even as mobile phone imports recorded a sharp increase in the early months of the current fiscal year, latest industry data showed.

Of the total production during the calendar year, locally assembled mobile phones accounted for 2.61 million units, while only 0.33 million units were imported commercially. Overall commercial imports stood at 2.37 million units, reflecting a growing preference for domestically assembled devices.

According to data from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), smartphones now make up 71% of mobile devices in use across the country, with the remaining 29% comprising 2G handsets. The rising share of smartphones continues to drive demand for local manufacturing.

Industry officials said government incentives and improvements in infrastructure have enabled both local and international manufacturers to expand assembly operations in Pakistan, helping reduce reliance on imports and supporting the growth of the domestic electronics sector.

Despite higher local output, mobile phone imports surged in the first five months of the 2025-26 fiscal year. Official figures show imports worth $801.14 million between July and November 2025, compared with $570.18 million in the same period last year, marking a 40.51% year-on-year increase.
