ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to observe the 27th anniversary of its 1998 nuclear tests on Wednesday, May 28, commemorating the day it became the first Muslim-majority country and the seventh nation globally to acquire nuclear weapons capability.

The tests, conducted in the Chagai district of Balochistan, were carried out in response to a series of nuclear tests by India earlier that month.

On May 28, 1998, Pakistan became the first Muslim-majority country and the seventh nation globally to possess nuclear capability, in response to India’s nuclear tests.

The government has already declared a public holiday on the occasion.

A team of Pakistani scientists, led by the founder of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, along with Dr. Samar Mubarakmand, successfully conducted nuclear tests in the Ras Koh Hills of Chagai District, Balochistan.

These tests were a clear demonstration of the Pakistani nation’s determination to safeguard its territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty, while also underscoring its commitment to maintaining strategic balance in South Asia.

The achievement marked the realization of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s vision—declaring that the nation would endure hardship if necessary, but would emerge as a nuclear power.

Pakistan remains firmly committed to fostering peace and stability in South Asia, while maintaining the capability to deter any form of aggression or adventurism.

On the day special ceremonies and programmes will be held across the country to mark the day.

This year, Youm-e-Takbeer will be observed with an added spirit of triumph as the nation celebrates not only the legacy of its nuclear strength but also a recent victory on the battlefield.

Earlier this May, Pakistan decisively responded to India’s military provocation, shooting down enemy fighter jets and targeting key installations in a powerful show of defence.

The escalation was sparked by India’s accusations linking Pakistan to the Pahalgam incident in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir – claims that Pakistan categorically denied, instead calling for an impartial and transparent investigation.

Refusing to bow to blame, Pakistan stood firm, and its swift, calculated response reinforced the message that the nation remains vigilant, resilient, and ready to defend its sovereignty.
