ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has issued a nationwide travel advisory after heavy snowfall swept across much of the country’s northern and mountainous regions, disrupting road links, stranding travellers and triggering emergency rescue operations.

Authorities said intense snowfall, accompanied by rain in several lower-lying areas, has affected wide swathes of Pakistan, with the heaviest impact reported in the northern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and parts of Punjab.

Popular hill resort Murree received sustained snowfall, prompting local authorities to close key access routes. The Islamabad–Murree Expressway (N-75) was shut to all traffic beyond the Phulgran toll plaza due to hazardous road conditions, officials said, urging the public to avoid non-essential travel.

In the Tirah valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rescue teams were deployed after reports that residents and travellers had become trapped by deep snow. Heavy snowfall was also recorded in Swat, Upper Dir, Chitral and surrounding mountainous areas, while intermittent rain was reported across parts of the country.

Officials warned that road conditions in high-altitude areas could deteriorate rapidly, with icy and slippery surfaces significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Travellers were advised to check weather forecasts and road updates before setting out and to avoid night-time travel, when visibility can drop sharply and emergency response times may be delayed.

Motorists heading towards northern areas were urged to ensure vehicles are fully prepared for winter conditions, with brakes, tyres, lights and windscreen wipers in proper working order. Authorities recommended carrying snow chains, anti-skid equipment, warm clothing, blankets, food supplies, drinking water and essential medicines. Travellers were also advised to keep mobile phones fully charged and to carry power banks.

Electricity supply has been disrupted in some snow-hit areas, officials said, as heavy snowfall brought down power lines, compounding difficulties for residents already facing freezing temperatures.

Drivers were cautioned to use low gears on steep slopes, avoid sudden braking and sharp turns, and to remain inside vehicles if stranded unless help is nearby.

The advisory comes as Pakistan enters the peak of its winter season, when heavy snowfall frequently disrupts transport and access to remote communities. Authorities said further updates would be issued as weather conditions evolve.
