ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a likely Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
A GLOF alert issued by the PMD stated, “Due to a significant rise in temperatures and upcoming weather system in Northern Pakistan, the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) is very likely to increase in glaciated areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa”.
The press release further said, “the persistent high temperatures may accelerate snow and glacier melt and subsequent weather events, potentially triggering GLOF and flash floods incidents, in vulnerable valleys and surrounding regions during the current and upcoming week”.

It added that all concerned are advised to remain alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation.
According to the Met Office, monsoon rains are likely to enhance from July 5. The PMD has predicted urban flooding in northern and central areas of Punjab on July 7. The PMD said that a “Low Flood Level” is likely in river Indus at Tarbela while the level of water flow will likely to remain normal in rivers Chenab, Sutlej, Ravi, Jhelum and Kabul during the next 24 hours.
However, the PMD forecasts a significant increase in water flow in rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej and Kabul on July 7.
It also predicated a medium level flood in hilly streams of Balochistan.
However, the PMD predicted flash flooding in eastern areas of Balochistan on July 7.
