ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has launched digital tools to record birth and death notifications directly from hospitals and healthcare centres, marking a significant step in modernising the country’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system.
The initiative, part of the federal government’s “Udaan Pakistan” programme, is led by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) under the National Registration and Biometric Policy Framework.
The system enables real-time recording of vital events at the point of occurrence, replacing manual processes that have long hindered timely and accurate registration.
New chapter in registration
As part of the National Registration and Biometric Policy Framework, NADRA’s latest initiative aims to record vital life events — such as births and deaths — in real time, at the point of occurrence.
These digital tools are being embedded directly within hospitals and healthcare units, enabling swift, accurate, and complete data entry.
This systemic overhaul addresses long-standing challenges in manual registration, ensuring every citizen is counted and acknowledged from the very beginning of life.
Digital identity and economy
This dynamic system will feed directly into “Udaan Pakistan”, acting as a key pillar in the federal government’s effort to build a tech-enabled governance ecosystem.
By capturing vital statistics accurately, the platform lays the groundwork for strategic programs including Digital ID, Digital Public Services, and the broader Digital Economy.
These improvements are not merely administrative; they are catalysts for economic stimulation, social inclusion, and better service delivery.
DEEP Impact
Central to these efforts is the Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP), spearheaded by NADRA in collaboration with the World Bank and supported by a range of national stakeholders.
DEEP aims to bolster Pakistan’s digital foundations — enhancing identity systems, promoting inclusive access, and integrating marginalized regions into the digital fold.
Bridging policy and practice
To implement this system across all regions — including Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) — NADRA is formalizing cooperation through provincial partnerships.
In Karachi, a key agreement was inked in a high-profile ceremony attended by Saeed Ghani, Sindh’s Provincial Minister for Local Government, Housing, and Town Planning. The Secretaries of Health and Local Government represented the Sindh Government, while DG NADRA Karachi sealed the accord on behalf of NADRA.
A similar event took place in Quetta, where NADRA joined hands with the Government of Balochistan. Present were the Provincial Secretaries of Health and Local Government, alongside the DG NADRA Balochistan, marking another milestone in this nationwide rollout.
Unified and digitized nation
Agreements with other provinces — including Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, AJ&K, and GB — are expected in the coming days, reflecting a cohesive national commitment to digital transformation.
