Pakistan International Airlines Unveils Two Direct Flights to Mountainous North

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced plans to launch direct flights from Lahore to Skardu and Gilgit – the scenic regions in the northernmost part of the country.

As per the plans, the flights will start on March 31, 2025.

The initiative will likely boost tourism in Pakistan’s northern regions, known for their breathtaking landscapes.

The new routes will provide travellers with convenient access to these popular destinations, fostering economic growth and promoting local tourism.

According to PIA, flights on the Lahore-Gilgit route will operate twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays, while Lahore-Skardu flights will be available on Thursdays and Sundays.

High demand

Demand for flight operations between Lahore and Gilgit Baltistan are high.

The airline has already begun final preparations to ensure smooth operations on these routes.

These flights are expected to reduce travel time significantly, offering a comfortable alternative to long road journeys.

Skardu and Gilgit are renowned for their stunning mountain ranges, serene lakes, and rich cultural heritage.

Improving accessibility

By improving accessibility, PIA aims to attract both domestic and international tourists, contributing to the region’s economic development and creating opportunities for local businesses.

PIA has begun finalising logistical arrangements to ensure the success of these new routes.

This includes training staff, upgrading facilities, and coordinating with local authorities.

In addition to the northern routes, PIA is preparing to resume direct flights to the United Kingdom. The airline has initiated arrangements to use Terminal 4 at London’s Heathrow Airport.
