ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Mission to the United Nations has delivered a letter to the United Nations Security Council informing the UN body about the breach of security and peace after India carried out multiple airstrikes across various sites in Pakistan, killing at least eight civilians, including two children.

In a letter addressed to the UNSC president, Pakistan strongly condemned Indian actions, calling them a threat to regional peace and security.

“I write to you in continuation of the letter addressed to the President of the Security Council by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan dated 29 April 2025, and the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council convened on 5 May 2025 at the request of Pakistan, drawing the urgent attention of the Security Council and the international community to India’s unilateral and highly provocative actions and its intention to conduct kinetic action against Pakistan, posing a grave threat to regional and international peace and security,” the letter read.

The letter follows an emergency meeting of the Security Council convened on May 5 at Pakistan’s request, where the country sought international attention to India’s escalating military intentions.

Cowardly strikes

“These cowardly strikes have resulted in the martyrdom of civilians, including women and children and caused injuries to several others. The full scale and scope of the damage to civilian infrastructure in the densely populated areas that were targeted in the middle of the night and the number of civilian casualties is still being ascertained. India’s irresponsible actions have also posed a grave threat to commercial air traffic,” the letter read.

According to the Pakistani government, the India carried out “cowardly” airstrikes during the night of May 6-7, targeting civilian areas in Muridke, Bahawalpur, Sialkot, and Shakargarh across the international border, as well as areas in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, including Kotli and Muzaffarabad, along the Line of Control (LoC).

Right to self-defence

Pakistan has reiterated its right to self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter and has warned that it reserves the right to respond “appropriately” to India’s “unprovoked” aggression. The letter emphasised that India will bear full responsibility for the consequences of the attack and urged the international community to hold India accountable.

The Pakistani request for the letter to be circulated as an official document under the “India-Pakistan Question” agenda of the Security Council signalled Islamabad’s intent to raise the issue at the highest diplomatic levels.
