ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Indonesia have reaffirmed that their relationship is rooted in shared values and decades of goodwill, expressing a strong commitment to work more closely for regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
This understanding was reached during a meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Islamabad on Tuesday, according to the President’s House media wing.
The discussion highlighted the historic bonds between the two nations, grounded in the vision of the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and former Indonesian President Sukarno.
Both leaders reiterated their resolve to promote interfaith harmony, tolerance, and inclusive development—principles they agreed would continue to guide bilateral cooperation.
The two presidents also reviewed the trajectory of bilateral trade and welcomed the steady growth in economic engagement.
President Zardari stressed the importance of ensuring more balanced market access and diversifying Pakistan’s exports.
Both sides also appreciated the establishment of the Joint Trade Committee as an effective platform for addressing trade issues and fostering stronger business linkages.
The meeting discussed areas where economic cooperation could expand, including information technology, renewable energy, agriculture, halal products, tourism, and infrastructure.
Both sides underlined the value of working together on climate resilience, disaster management, and sustainable development, given the shared challenges facing the two countries.
The two leaders agreed to further strengthen their defence cooperation, including through training and joint production.
They emphasised the importance of continued close coordination at multilateral forums, particularly in joint efforts to counter Islamophobia and promote unity within the Muslim world. Regional and global developments were also discussed in detail.
Stressing the need for lasting peace, security, and prosperity in the region, President Zardari briefed the visiting leader on the situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
President Zardari also extended heartfelt condolences over the tragic loss of life and severe destruction caused by the recent floods and landslides in Sumatra.
He prayed for the departed souls and wished a swift and complete recovery for all those injured in the disaster.
