ISLAMABAD: The Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of Pakistan and India on Thursday held their third hotline contact and agreed to ease cross-border tensions after a week of intense clashes.

Sources said Pakistan’s DGMO Maj Gen Kashif Abdullah and his Indian counterpart Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai had agreed to maintain the status quo and take the peace process forward after the ceasefire.

Pakistan’s security sources, on the other hand, said the two officers spoke over the hotline and completed the first round of talks.

Two days after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Pakistan and India following intense clashes, the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both countries held their first round of talks to discuss the way forward. The initial contact was made on Monday, May 12.

Security sources confirmed that the DGMOs communicated via a direct hotline.

The two military leaders are expected to hold detailed discussions in the coming days to finalise the modalities of the ceasefire agreement brokered through the US president’s intervention.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has affirmed that the United States supports direct dialogue between India and Pakistan and encourages ongoing efforts to improve bilateral relations.

Ceasefire Agreement

Nuclear-armed neighbours Pakistan and India agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday, May 10, following four days of intense fighting and mounting pressure from the United States. The agreement was reached through sustained negotiations between the two sides.

In a statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry affirmed the country’s commitment to the ceasefire. “Our forces are handling the situation responsibly and with restraint,” the statement read.

The ministry also urged troops on the ground to continue exercising restraint and emphasised that any issues related to the ceasefire’s implementation should be addressed through appropriate communication channels.
