LONDON: The Pakistan High Commission in London celebrated the 77th Independence Day with traditional fervor and enthusiasm on Wednesday.
High Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Faisal led the ceremony by hoisting the Pakistani flag to the tune of the National Anthem.
The event began with the recitation of the Holy Quran and the reading of messages from the President, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister.
In his address, High Commissioner Dr. Faisal honored the founding fathers who fought for a homeland where Muslims of the Subcontinent could live with dignity and pride. He paid tribute to Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah for his selfless struggle and reaffirmed the commitment to realizing Allama Iqbal’s vision for a strong and prosperous Pakistan.
Dr. Faisal acknowledged the debt owed to the martyrs and heroes, stating that their sacrifices can never be repaid. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Kashmiri and Palestinian brethren striving for their right to self-determination.
The High Commissioner also recognized the significant contributions of British Pakistanis in strengthening ties between Pakistan and the UK. He praised their hard work, dedication, and passion.
Dr. Faisal emphasized that the story of Pakistan continues to be written by the brave men and women defending the nation’s sovereignty. He pledged to work together in unity to build the prosperous, strong, and peaceful Pakistan envisioned by its founders.
During the ceremony, Dr. Faisal, on behalf of the President of Pakistan, conferred civil awards to Mr. Asif Rangoonwala (Business/Social Work), Dr. Javaid Ahmed Sheikh (Philanthropy), Prof. Mohammad Amjad Shad (Neurosurgery), and Mr. Khalid Mehmood MP (Politics/Services to Pakistan).
A special tribute was paid to Abdullah, a young Pakistani who heroically intervened to prevent a stabbing attack in Leicester Square, saving the lives of a mother and child.
Furthermore, accolades were cited for Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan’s first Olympic Javelin Gold medallist.
The celebration concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, attended by UK parliamentarians, diplomats, members of the Pakistani community, media personnel, and High Commission officials with their families.
