ISLAMABAD: Pakistan head coach Gary Kirsten has voiced strong concerns about the fitness, skills, and unity of the national cricket team following their early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. Kirsten’s remarks came after Pakistan’s failure to advance past the group stage, despite a three-wicket victory over Ireland in their final match, local media reported.
In a discussion with the team, media reported that Kirsten criticized the players’ fitness levels, stating they are not up to international standards. He also highlighted significant deficiencies in the team’s skill set. “Despite playing so much cricket, no one knows which shot to play and when,” Kirsten lamented.
The former South African cricketer expressed disappointment over the lack of cohesion within the squad. He noted an absence of mutual support among players, a situation he described as unprecedented in his extensive coaching career. Kirsten emphasized that only those who show commitment to unity, fitness, and skill improvement will continue to be part of the team, while those who fail to meet these standards will be excluded.
Pakistan’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024 ended with a win over Ireland at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida, on Sunday. However, this victory was insufficient to compensate for their earlier losses. A shocking defeat to the US and a subsequent loss to India sealed their elimination before the Super 8 stage. Ultimately, Pakistan finished third in Group A, with two wins out of four games.
