ISLAMABAD: Pakistani security forces foiled an infiltration attempt by terrorists along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border in the Chaman sector, killing one terrorist during an exchange of fire, security sources said on Sunday.
According to the security sources, troops intercepted a group of three to four terrorists attempting to cross into Pakistan from the Afghan side near the border fence.
The terrorists were trying to cut through the fence when Pakistani troops engaged them.
“One terrorist was killed during the exchange of fire while the others fled the scene in an injured condition,” security sources said.
Officials said four to five improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and equipment used to cut the border fence were recovered from the terrorists.
Security sources said the terrorists belonged to Fitna al Khawarij, a term used by Pakistani authorities for terrorist groups operating against the state.
They added that security forces continue operations along the border to safeguard the fence and prevent infiltration attempts.
Counter-terror operations
The infiltration attempt comes amid a broader counter-terrorism campaign across Pakistan’s north-western regions.
Pakistan’s military said security forces killed 13 “Indian-backed” terrorists during a series of intelligence-based operations conducted on March 6 and 7 across multiple districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In a statement on Sunday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, said the operations targeted terrorists linked to “Indian-backed Fitna Al Khwarij”.
The engagements took place in Bajaur, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber and South Waziristan districts.
According to the statement, security forces conducted an intelligence-based raid on a terrorist hideout in Bajaur district, where five terrorists were killed during an intense exchange of fire.
Separate operations in Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan districts resulted in the killing of three additional terrorists after troops engaged them in combat operations.
Meanwhile, in Khyber and South Waziristan districts, security forces eliminated five terrorists during two separate engagements aimed at dismantling terrorist networks operating in the region.
The military said weapons and ammunition were recovered from the slain terrorists, who were involved in multiple attacks against security forces and civilians.
