UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has urged further intensifying cooperation among developing nations to complement North-South cooperation, saying it was critical as the world contends with interlinked crises of food, finance, and climate change.

Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative in the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Aamir Khan said that the South-South cooperation could have a far-reaching impact in multiple areas including such as trade, education, health, human capital, agriculture infrastructure connectivity, science and technology, disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, and etc.

He said that the South-South cooperation was not an alternative but in fact, a complement to North-South cooperation and the developed nations must fulfil their pledges and commitments for North-South cooperation.

The envoy said that Pakistan was hopeful that the South-South partners would continue to enhance collaboration based on equality, mutual benefits, and win-win results.

Pakistan fully committed to replicate successful examples

He said that Pakistan was standing fully committed to replicating the successful examples of the South and sharing lessons it learned in the context of climate resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction, especially in the wake of last year’s climate-induced floods. The Resilient Recovery, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Framework (4RF) presented an all-inclusive strategy to ensure resilient recovery and to cut the impact of disasters and climate catastrophe on developmental gains.

He added that there was a need to further tap into the massive potential of South-South and triangular cooperation to ensure that no one is left behind.

Giving his recommendations in this regard, the ambassador called for contributing more generously to the UN Office for South-South Cooperation’s work, bringing a mechanism to measure the impact of South-South cooperation by collecting empirical data and establishing interregional and global frameworks to create a platform for sharing best practices.
