KARACHI: Pakistan’s security forces have foiled a major terror plot in Karachi after uncovering an explosive-laden vehicle and a large cache of explosives stored in drums during an intelligence-led operation, officials said.

The seizure, involving nearly two tonnes of explosive material,  allegedly linked to the banned Baloch Liberation Army’s Majeed Brigade, may have targeted key locations across the metropolis, highlighting both the scale of the threat and the increasing effectiveness of coordinated, intelligence-led counterterrorism efforts.

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, is a sprawling port metropolis on the Arabian Sea and the country’s main commercial and financial hub. Home to an estimated population of over 20 million, the megacity drives much of Pakistan’s trade, industry, and economic activity.

The operation led to the recovery of a suicide vehicle and a huge cache of explosive material, ensuring the safety of residents and critical infrastructure.

According to police, the raid uncovered a mini-truck that had been converted into a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED).

The vehicle was skillfully concealed inside a compound beneath piles of clothing, an apparent attempt to avoid suspicion and allow discreet movement within the neighbourhood.

Investigators revealed that the prepared vehicle contained 60 plastic drums filled with explosives along with five explosive-laden cylinders.

The total weight of the seized material was estimated to be around 2,000 kilogrammes, underscoring the scale of the threat that was successfully neutralized.

Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) personnel carried out a safe and professional defusing operation, removing the explosive drums and cylinders from both the mini-truck and the adjoining room.

The materials were taken into secure custody after experts identified a release switch installed close to the vehicle’s gear and transmission system, indicating readiness for use. Sources confirmed that the explosives were intended to be transported into Karachi for attacks on key locations.

Officials said the operation specifically targeted militants linked to the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army’s Majeed Brigade. All recovered explosive materials and associated devices have been fully secured, marking a significant step in protecting the city from an imminent threat.

Security experts say the success of the operation underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and strong inter-agency coordination. It also reinforces the importance of proactive security measures and public cooperation in sustaining peace, resilience, and public confidence in the city’s safety environment.
