ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to Pakistan’s Prime Minister (SAPM) Haroon Akhtar Khan on Thursday announced that the Mobile and Electronic Device Manufacturing Policy has been formalised and is set to be presented to the Prime Minister in the near future.
He noted that under the policy, international brands will be encouraged to manufacture their devices in Pakistan, while local brands will also be empowered to expand their manufacturing capabilities.
Haroon Akhtar was chairing a high-level meeting on the Mobile and Electronic Device Manufacturing Policy, which was attended by senior officials and representatives of mobile phone manufacturers, according to a press release.
During the meeting, a detailed briefing was given on the Mobile and Electronic Device Manufacturing Policy for the period 2026–2033.
Haroon Akhtar Khan stated that the policy has been formulated after extensive consultations with all stakeholders and covers mobile phones, laptops, and other electronic devices, making it a comprehensive and broad-based policy.
He added that the policy represents a major shift for Pakistan from simple assembly operations towards full-scale manufacturing and is essential for the promotion of manufacturing and exports in the country.

Haroon Akhtar Khan said the policy will soon be presented to the Prime Minister for approval.
He noted that the policy clearly outlines phase-wise manufacturing targets and timelines, emphasising that Pakistan is on the verge of transitioning from mere assembling to full-scale manufacturing.
According to the Engineering Development Board, the policy aims to achieve 50 percent localisation of mobile phone production by 2033.
Additionally, it sets a target of 70 percent e-waste recovery through organised systems, which is expected to have a positive environmental impact.
The policy also focuses on human capital development, with plans to train 50,000 skilled workers, including 15,000 specialized professionals, to support the growing electronics manufacturing sector.
