DUBAI: Pakistan will be looking to end India’s unbeaten run and avenge two earlier defeats when the arch-rivals meet in the Asia Cup 2025 final in Dubai on Sunday.
India have dominated the eight-nation tournament, sweeping past every opponent on their way to the final. They twice defeated Pakistan – by seven wickets in the group stage and by six wickets in the Super Four round.
Led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, India boast the tournament’s top batter and bowler. Opener Abhishek Sharma has amassed 309 runs in six innings, providing explosive starts in the powerplay overs, while left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav leads the wicket tally with 13 scalps.
Jasprit Bumrah has contained opposition batters with the new ball, and India’s depth of all-rounders has given Yadav ample options.
“(I got) what I wanted from the boys — just to try and execute their plans, be clear and not to fear,” Yadav told reporters after their dramatic Super Over win against Sri Lanka. “Happy to be in the final.”
Pakistan booked their spot in the title clash with an 11-run win over Bangladesh on Thursday. Skipper Salman Agha said his team were determined to overturn their recent record against India.
“We know what we need to do, and we are a good enough team to beat anyone,” he said. “We will come on Sunday and try to beat them.”
Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson urged his players to ignore political distractions that have surrounded the tournament.
India and Pakistan have not shaken hands after either of their previous matches, with both games marked by heated gestures and accusations. The final comes just months after a military flare-up between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
“Look, my message to the players is just focus on cricket,” said Hesson, the former New Zealand coach. “We have to put India under pressure for longer because there is a reason why they are ranked the top side in the world.”
Hesson admitted India’s Abhishek Sharma had been decisive in their last encounter. “We had that game by the scruff of the neck for long periods and it took an exceptional innings from Abhishek that took the game away from us,” he said.
The final is expected to draw thousands of fans from both nations to Dubai International Stadium. Ticket prices have surged, with seats ranging from 350 dirhams (about $95) to premium hospitality packages costing up to 11,000 dirhams ($3,000).
Pakistan and India have contested five multinational finals since 1985. Pakistan lead that tally 3-2, with their last triumph coming in the 2017 Champions Trophy final in London. India’s most famous victory came in the inaugural 2007 World T20 final.
Security has been tightened around the venue as excitement builds for what is one of world cricket’s fiercest rivalries.
