ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation of Afghanistan has confirmed that Pakistan has extended the Proof of Registration (POR) cards for Afghan refugees residing in the country for another year.

In an announcement made on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the Afghan Commissioner for Refugees in Islamabad affirmed the extension of POR cards, effective from June 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.

The decision to extend the residence cards comes amidst the Pakistani government’s decision to repatriate illegal foreigners, including Afghan refugees.

The extension of POR cards provides temporary relief but does little to alleviate the broader challenges faced by refugees in their host countries.

Pakistan, grappling with the burden of hosting one of the world’s largest refugee populations, continues to struggle with managing the influx of Afghan refugees and providing adequate support. The situation in Iran mirrors similar challenges, underscoring the urgent need for international assistance and sustainable solutions to address the refugee crisis.
