ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday expressed deep grief at the tragic loss and damage caused by the recent cloudburst in Kishtwar, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The Foreign Office, in a statement, said the Government and people of Pakistan are deeply grieved at the tragic loss of precious lives in IIOJK.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” it said.

It further said that Pakistan stands in solidarity with the Kashmiris in this time of distress and reiterates its unwavering support for their resilience in the face of continuing hardships.

Rescuers on Friday recovered bodies from mud and debris after a devastating flood swept through a remote village in occupied Kashmir, killing at least 60 people and leaving many others missing.

Chositi, a remote Himalayan village in  Kishtwar district, is the last point accessible by vehicles along the route of an ongoing annual Hindu pilgrimage to a mountain shrine located at an altitude of 3,000 meters (9,500 feet), about an 8-kilometer (5-mile) trek from the village.

Several pilgrims are also feared to have been affected by the flash floods and landslides. Authorities have suspended the pilgrimage, which began on July 25 and was scheduled to conclude on September 5. Additional rescue teams are being deployed to reinforce ongoing relief and rescue efforts.

According to experts, cloudbursts have increased in recent years due to climate change, while damage from the storms also has increased because of unplanned development in mountain regions
