ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday underscored the importance of sustained dialogue as the only viable path to resolving long-standing international disputes, particularly the ongoing Iran–US standoff.

The President of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) made the remarks during a meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghaddam, in Lahore.

Chief Minister of the Punjab province, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, was also present on the occasion.

The envoy, in a statement on X, said the two sides exchanged views on the latest regional developments, particularly the escalation of tension between Iran and the United States.

He added that during the meeting, the current state of Pakistan-Iranian ties also came under discussion, with both sides expressing resolve to further strengthen bilateral ties.

Pakistan has been invited to participate in the upcoming talks between Iran and the United States aimed at easing regional tensions, the Foreign Office spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi told the media on Tuesday that Pakistan had received a formal invitation to attend the dialogue.

Iran and the United States will resume nuclear talks on Friday in Turkiye, as regional powers intensify efforts to de-escalate mounting tensions and prevent a broader conflict.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi are scheduled to meet in Istanbul in an attempt to revive diplomacy over Iran’s nuclear programme, a dispute that has persisted for years and fuelled fears of a new regional war.

Ambassador Reza Amiri Moghaddam, in the meeting, acknowledged the support Iran received from the government of Pakistan in various arenas.

“While stressing Iran’s full readiness to defend itself against any imminent adventurism, I underlined the steadfast determination of the Islamic Republic of Iran to pursue fair, equitable, and constructive negotiations aimed at resolving outstanding issues through dialogue, mutual respect, and adherence to international norms,” he said.

He added that Nawaz Sharif expressed concern regarding recent developments and imminent threats towards Iran.

He emphasised that dialogue and diplomacy —while firmly safeguarding national sovereignty and rejecting both the threat and use of force—remain the only credible path to lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in an already volatile region.
