Pakistan Evacuating Citizens from Iran via Azerbaijan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has initiated efforts to evacuate its citizens stranded in Iran via Azerbaijan, officials informed a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday.

The meeting reviewed the prevailing regional environment and Pakistan’s internal security situation, according to a statement issued by the Media Wing of the Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday.

The session carried out a comprehensive review of the evolving regional landscape and deliberated on a range of measures aimed at promoting peace and stability.

Participants highlighted Pakistan’s proactive diplomatic engagement and ongoing efforts to support regional harmony.

The situation in Afghanistan was also examined in detail, with officials briefing the Prime Minister on recent developments and their potential security implications for Pakistan.

Attendees were further briefed on the country’s internal security environment and the steps being taken to maintain law and order nationwide.

On the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented a detailed update on arrangements to evacuate Pakistani nationals from Iran and ensure their safe return.

The meeting was informed that efforts are underway to facilitate the evacuation through Azerbaijan.

The meeting was attended by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff and Federal Ministers along with senior civil and military officials.

Earlier, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended condolences to the government and people of Iran over the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in large-scale US–Israeli strikes.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also postponed his scheduled visit to Russia in light of the prevailing regional and domestic situation.  He was scheduled to visit Russia from 2nd to 5th March 2026.
