ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Tuesday said that 700 Pakistanis had been evacuated to safety in Sudan, where intense fighting has killed hundreds of people and sparked the evacuation of foreigners.

The foreign minister said today that another convoy carrying 211 Pakistani nationals dispatched from Khartoum has arrived in Port Sudan. With it, the total number of evacuated Pakistanis has reached 700.

Earlier this week, Bilawal tweeted that Pakistanis were being housed near the port before their journey. The foreign ministry said around 1,500 Pakistanis were in Sudan, whose security and safety were closely monitored.

Sporadic gunfire was reported in parts of the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Tuesday despite a US-brokered deal between the warring parties to a ceasefire for 72 hours to pave the way for negotiations on a more lasting truce.

Over 4000 foreigners evacuated

At least 427 people have been killed and over 3,700 wounded, according to UN agencies. Over 4,000 people have fled Sudan in foreign-arranged evacuations that started on Saturday. –APP
