ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan electoral body has postponed elections in four constituencies of the national and provincial assemblies due to the unfortunate deaths of candidates in these areas.
The affected constituencies include one national and three provincial assembly seats, namely NA-8 Bajaur, PK-22 Bajaur, PK-91 Kohat, and PP-266 Rahim Yar Khan XII, said the Election Commission of Pakistan on Saturday.
The cancellation of elections in NA-8 Bajaur and PK-22 Bajaur comes in the aftermath of the assassination of independent candidate Rehan Zeb Khan, who was contesting for both the National Assembly and provincial assembly seats in Bajaur-IV.
Similarly, the elections for NA-91 Kohat-II have been postponed following the death of Asmat Ullah Khan, who was contesting the election on the Awami National Party ticket.
In Punjab province, the Election Commission has decided to delay the elections for PP-266 Rahim Yar Khan XII constituency after the demise of Israr Hussain, son of Talib Hussain, who was a candidate for the Punjab Assembly.
The ECP spokesperson said that, in accordance with the powers granted to the Returning Officers (ROs) under Section 73 of the Election Act, 2017, the proceedings of the general election in the mentioned constituencies have been abruptly concluded.
The remaining candidates in these constituencies will not be required to submit fresh nomination papers or deposit additional dues once the revised schedule for these areas is released, as outlined by the electoral watchdog.
