VEHARI, Pakistan: In a devastating turn of events, the Sutlej River overflowed catastrophically in the region of Vehari, causing extensive flooding that submerged numerous small and big settlements.
The severely impacted areas include Vehari, Mailsi, and Burewala, where people are battling against the flooded waters. The floodwaters tragically affected villages, including Bhatian, Kuchi Puki, Ladan, Sahuka, Jamlera, Gahi Shah, Siphon, and Farooqabad.
For the past three days, the district has grappled with a high-level flood that affected a large number of people in the river belt. The devastating impact of flood has extended to livestock, infrastructure, and crops, with thousands of acres of agricultural land rendered unproductive.
Additionally, the floodwaters have damaged numerous regions of land connectivity and the power transmission infrastructure. Tragically, two people were killed due to the floodwaters’ ferocity.
In response, local government agencies set up 13 flood relief camps, more than 20 tent villages, medical camps, and other facilities to help those in need. To help the flood victims, social organizations and welfare institutions have stepped in to provide food and support.
However, the situation is still terrible because there aren’t enough food, medications, or sanitary facilities. Elderly people, women, and children—the most vulnerable—face terrible problems. Since many affected people have sought refuge along roadsides, highlighting the urgency of the crisis.
Provision of clothing and other necessities to individuals impacted by the floods is underway as the region unites to overcome this disaster. Despite the hardships, people and organizations come together to ease the pain brought on by this natural disaster, displaying a spirit of resilience and shared support. —APP
