ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, will travel to New York on 18 February to attend a high-level briefing of the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Palestine.

The United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary will chair the session in her capacity as President of the Security Council, a Foreign Office statement said on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the deputy prime minister is expected to reaffirm Pakistan’s consistent and principled stance on the Palestinian issue.

He will reiterate Islamabad’s strong opposition to Israel’s recent illegal measures aimed at expanding its control over the West Bank, stress the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, call for the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 2803, advocate for increased humanitarian assistance, and emphasise the early launch of Gaza’s recovery and reconstruction efforts.

“The Deputy Prime will also underscore Pakistan’s continued engagement with international and regional partners, including the Group of Eight Arab and Islamic countries and the United States, in support of a just and lasting peace, anchored in international law, leading to the realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent, sovereign and contiguous Palestinian State based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital,” it said.

On the sidelines of his visit, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts to discuss issues of mutual interest and strengthen diplomatic engagement.
