ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s government has officially declared May 28 a public holiday across the country to commemorate Youm-e-Takbeer — the day the nation roared into the nuclear age.
The Establishment Division issued a formal notification late Monday, affirming the closure of offices to honour the memory of Pakistan’s landmark nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, in the rugged mountains of Chagai, Balochistan.
This powerful moment in history marked Pakistan’s emergence as the world’s seventh nuclear power — and notably, the first among Muslim-majority nations — after responding to India’s earlier nuclear tests with a resolute show of technological strength and strategic autonomy.
The province of Sindh had taken the lead in announcing the public holiday a day earlier, confirming that all provincial offices, local councils, and government departments would remain shuttered on May 28.
The gesture echoes the broader national sentiment, as citizens across the country prepare to observe the day with ceremonies, special programs, and patriotic tributes.
In line with the national observance, the Pakistan Stock Exchange has also announced it will suspend trading on May 28.
An official notice from the Chief Market Operations Officer confirmed the closure, signalling a nationwide pause in business and government activity to reflect on this milestone.
Youm-e-Takbeer — which translates to “The Day of Greatness,” stands as a symbol of national resolve, scientific achievement, and geopolitical assertion.
Each year, it rekindles memories of a defining moment when Pakistan defied pressure and made a stand for its security and sovereignty.
As the country prepares to mark the 27th anniversary of this pivotal chapter in its history, the flag will fly higher, the stories will be retold with reverence, and the spirit of Chagai will echo once more across the mountains and plains of Pakistan.
This year, Youm-e-Takbeer will be observed with an added spirit of triumph and deep gratitude to Almighty Allah, as the nation celebrates not only the legacy of its nuclear strength but also a recent victory on the battlefield.
Earlier this May, Pakistan decisively responded to India’s military provocation, shooting down enemy fighter jets and targeting key installations in a powerful show of defence.
The escalation was sparked by India’s accusations linking Pakistan to the Pahalgam incident in Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir – claims that Pakistan categorically denied, instead calling for an impartial and transparent investigation.
Refusing to bow to blame, Pakistan stood firm, and its swift, calculated response reinforced the message that the nation remains vigilant, resilient, and ready to defend its sovereignty.
