RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: The Pakistan cricket team has been penalized 20% of their match fee for a slow over-rate during the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

The sanction was imposed by Ali Naqvi, an official from the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, after Shaheen Shah Afridi’s side was found to be four overs behind the required target, even after considering time allowances.

Slow over-rate results in penalty

The fine follows Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences. According to this rule, players are fined five percent of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time.

Skipper Afridi accepts the fine

Shaheen Shah Afridi, the Pakistan captain, admitted to the offence and accepted the fine, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

The charge was levied by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Asif Yaqoob, as well as third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Rashid Riaz.
