MULTAN: Assistant Coach Azhar Mahmood of the Pakistan cricket team expressed strong optimism ahead of the second Test against England, emphasizing the team’s intent to leverage the local conditions for a decisive victory.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Mahmood reflected on the first Test, noting that the team had anticipated more spin from the pitch. “We expected the ball to spin more, but it didn’t until the final day. This time, we’re hopeful for different conditions,” he said.

Addressing questions about the absence of star player Babar Azam for the upcoming match, Mahmood clarified that Babar was not dropped but rather given a rest. “Babar is our number one player. He hasn’t been dropped; the selection committee decided to rest him, along with Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi,” he explained.

Mahmood highlighted the mental strain on players in recent months, stating, “No matter how strong a player may be, ongoing challenges can take a mental toll. It was important to give Babar and Shaheen a break.”

He also underscored the significance of player fitness ahead of upcoming tours to Australia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. “With a lot of cricket ahead, this is the best time to rest our key players. I’m confident that Babar, Naseem, and Shaheen will return refreshed and ready for action,” he added.

Mahmood praised England’s fitness and resilience, noting that top physical condition can mitigate the impact of weather and other external factors. Nonetheless, he expressed confidence in Pakistan’s preparations and eagerness to level the series.

The second Test is expected to be a thrilling encounter, with Pakistan determined to bounce back from the challenges faced in the first match and deliver a strong performance.
