LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Saturday rejected a petition challenging the acceptance of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s nomination papers from NA-130.

A three-member bench led by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi heard the petition filed by Pakistan Awami Mahaz chief Advocate Ishtiaq Chaudhry against the decision of the Appellate Tribunal.

Chaudhry had contested the acceptance of Nawaz Sharif’s nomination papers, citing his lifetime disqualification by the Supreme Court in the Panama case.

The court noted that the Supreme Court had already provided its verdict on Sharif’s eligibility. The petitioner argued that the tribunal’s dismissal of the appeal against Nawaz Sharif’s nomination papers contradicted the facts of the case, emphasizing that Sharif’s lifetime disqualification should prevent him from contesting the election.

The petitioner pointed out that the Supreme Court’s decision against disqualification for life came after the approval of Nawaz Sharif’s nomination papers, asserting that this decision should not apply to Sharif’s case.

He pleaded with the court to reject Sharif’s nomination papers.

Moonis Elahi Disqualified for 2024 Elections

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Moonis Elahi has been disqualified from the 2024 election race as the Lahore High Court dismissed appeals against his nomination papers from all four constituencies.

A three-member bench, led by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, reviewed the petitions of Qaisra Elahi and Moonis Elahi, challenging the decisions of the appellate tribunal.

The court invalidated the appellate tribunal’s decision and upheld the appeals of Pervaiz Elahi’s wife, Qaisra Elahi, who had challenged the rejection of her nomination papers from NA-69, NA-64, and PP-32.

However, the Lahore High Court rejected Moonis Elahi’s pleas seeking the annulment of the appellate tribunal’s decision.
