ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday reiterated that Pakistan was continuing its efforts for the restoration of peace in the Middle East amid escalating global fuel prices.

The Prime Minister made the remarks while addressing a meeting of the federal cabinet. In his address, he noted that global oil prices had “skyrocketed” due to the instability in the region.

“Pakistan is playing its role as before in restoring peace in the region,” he said, adding that Pakistani delegations had visited Tehran twice over the past two to three weeks as part of efforts to address the ongoing regional crisis.

He said, “Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir had visited Tehran, followed by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi”. He also referred to visits by “Saudi Arabia’s defence minister and Turkiye’s Ibrahim Kalin,” saying positive discussions had taken place.

He said international oil and energy prices had risen sharply because of instability in the region.

Pakistan has been actively pursuing diplomatic efforts to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran, as regional hostilities have disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and driven up global energy prices.

The meeting in Tehran aimed to establish channels of communication, promote dialogue and prevent further military escalation.

Turning to petroleum prices, the prime minister said, “petrol prices had been expected to increase by Rs15 per litre the previous Friday.”

He praised Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, his team, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the relevant committee for working with oil refineries to share their “windfall profits” instead of passing the entire increase on to consumers.

PM Sharif also said that the federal government had finalised a proposed Rs160bn package for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“Security is our number one, two and three priority in KP,” the premier remarked. He further noted that counterterrorism efforts continued in the region.

“With the efforts of law enforcement agencies, the new government in KP and the support of the federal government, we will crush terrorism,” he said.

He also acknowledged that “Balochistan had faced terrorism for a considerable period.” The prime minister recalled that “terrorism had largely been eliminated by 2018 but had subsequently resurfaced.”

The prime minister expressed hope that the menace would once again be eliminated through the efforts of security institutions and the prayers of the nation.

Returning to the energy situation, PM Shehbaz said the government was preparing for winter amid challenges affecting maritime routes.

He said the government was also holding frequent meetings to secure adequate supplies of liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and other fuels during the winter months, amid continued uncertainty in regional energy markets.
