KEY POINTS

  • Hesson says the focus is on winning games, not strike rates or averages
  • With five spinners and multiple all-rounders, he believes Pakistan has the balance and flexibility

DUBAI: Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson on Thursday brushed aside concerns over his team’s batting form ahead of their Asia Cup 2025 clash with India, saying the line-up had proved itself in recent wins, including a convincing tri-series final victory over Afghanistan.

While India arrive as favourites and also defending T20 world champions, Pakistan come in on a high after convincingly beating Afghanistan in the final of a UAE tri-series. Pakistan begin their Asia Cup campaign against Oman tomorrow (Friday).

No Cause for Panic

Asked about criticism of Pakistan’s batting in recent games, Hesson said he was “not quite sure” where the doubts were coming from, pointing out that his side defeated one of the world’s best wrist‑spin attacks by over 70 runs in the final against Afghanistan.

He emphasized that the batting line-up is developing, acknowledging that while some players may not always have their best days, the focus is on collective performance rather than individual averages or strike rates.

“It’s not about average strike‑rate,” Hesson said. “What matters is what’s required to win the game, and whether we can get above that.” He added, “As a batting unit, we have got the job done.”

Looking Ahead to India Clash

The atmosphere in Dubai ahead of the India‑Pakistan match is “highly charged,” Hesson admitted, but stressed the importance of staying grounded and concentrating on the task at hand.

He conceded India are “hugely confident”, a rightful feeling, given their recent string of wins, but said Pakistan are focused on improving “day by day,” resisting the urge to look too far ahead.

On the pitch, Hesson suggested conditions in Dubai differ from those in Sharjah, citing less grass abrasiveness. He noted Pakistan’s squad has good balance, with multi-skilled players offering flexibility.

Squad & Spin Options

The coach declared that while the playing XI for Pakistan’s match with Oman hasn’t been finalized yet, the team is well prepared.

With five spinners in the squad, including Mohammad Nawaz, whom Hesson called “the best spin bowler in the world” and a battery of seamers to back them, Pakistan believe they have the tools to adapt.
