BEIJING: Pakistan and China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote Green Development between the two friendly nations.

The MoU was signed in Beijing between Pakistan-China Institute (PCI) and the Belt & Road Initiative Green Development Coalition (BRIGDC) in Beijing, according to a press release on Thursday.

The MoU will facilitate and promote China-Pakistan cooperation on Environment and Climate Change, to support the Green and low-carbon development of the BRI. This is the first-ever MoU on Green Development that BRIGDC has signed with any Pakistani institution.

Under the agreement, both parties will collaborate closely to advance green and low-carbon cooperation between China and Pakistan within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The partnership will encompass joint research on strengthening China–Pakistan collaboration in green and low-carbon development, the co-organisation of consultation workshops and research report launches with key stakeholders and experts, and mutual participation in major studies and activities upon invitation.

Additionally, both sides will work together to develop high-level policy recommendations aimed at promoting green and low-carbon energy, sustainable transportation, and other strategic areas relevant to Pakistan and other BRI partner countries.

From the Pakistan side, the MoU was signed by Mustafa Hyder Sayed, Executive Director of Pakistan-China Institute (PCI), and from the Chinese side, it was signed by Chen Gang, the Secretary General of BRIGDC.

Speaking to the media, Mustafa Sayed termed the timing of the signing of the MoU as ‘significant as it comes on the eve of the big CoP-30 conference in Brazil next month, and the MoU is also a recognition of the key role being played by the Pakistan-China Institute to promote Green Development in Pakistan, particularly the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.

CPEC’. He added that ‘since CPEC is the flagship of BRI, this initiative will be a big plus for Green Development of CPEC, especially now in its second phase’.
