ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have launched the China-Pakistan Information Corridor (CPIC) in Islamabad to strengthen media cooperation, promote reliable information sharing and deepen people-to-people ties between the two countries amid growing concerns over misinformation and fake news.

Addressing the launch ceremony at the Pakistan-China Friendship Centre, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar said the initiative would carry forward the legacy of Pakistan-China friendship to future generations, describing it as a shared responsibility of both nations.

Tarar said the importance of the China-Pakistan Information Corridor had increased, adding that the initiative would serve as a bridge between the people of the two countries through media, digital platforms, information exchange and cultural engagement.

He described the relationship between the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and CPIC by saying that CPEC connects the two economies, while CPIC would foster mutual understanding and strengthen public engagement.

The minister highlighted four key pillars of the China-Pakistan Information Corridor:

  • Media cooperation: Facilitating verified news exchange between Pakistani and Chinese media organisations and establishing fact-checking mechanisms to counter misinformation.
  • Business and enterprise: Promoting trade, investment and stronger commercial linkages between the two countries.
  • Think tanks and academia: Encouraging joint research, policy dialogue, scholarly exchanges and publications to deepen bilateral understanding.
  • Culture, tourism and youth: Expanding people-to-people contacts, cultural exchanges, tourism cooperation and opportunities for youth engagement.

Tarar said the initiative had been designed as an integrated ecosystem bringing together media organisations, think tanks, scholars, businesses, universities and young people to advance bilateral cooperation.

He also announced that the first regional office of the corridor’s trade pillar had been established in Karachi.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong said the CPIC would promote greater cohesion through information sharing and a better understanding of each other’s cultures and traditions. He added that the initiative would help counter propaganda targeting the two countries and strengthen public support for their longstanding friendship.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning described the corridor’s launch as timely and important, noting that the growing challenges posed by fake news and misinformation had increased the need for accurate, timely and reliable information.

She said the initiative’s four pillars would help communicate the story of China-Pakistan cooperation and enable more people to understand the bilateral relationship, strengthening the public foundation of their all-weather strategic cooperative partnership.

Secretary Information and Broadcasting Ashfaq Ahmed Khalil said the corridor would provide a platform for media professionals, academics, think tanks, businesses and young people from both countries to jointly communicate the story of their partnership.

He said existing agreements between news agencies, broadcasters and film organisations had laid the groundwork for news exchange, content sharing and co-production.

Khalil thanked the Chinese government, particularly the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, for its support in developing the initiative. He added that the corridor would facilitate the exchange of information, media content and professional expertise while promoting credible reporting on bilateral relations.
