ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s middle-order batter Hassan Nawaz enjoyed a dream One Day International (ODI) debut, steering his side to victory with a composed, match-winning knock of 63 against the West Indies in the opening fixture of the three-match series at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba on Friday.

The 22-year-old etched his name into the record books, becoming just the 14th Pakistani to score a fifty or more on ODI debut — and the first in six years since Abid Ali struck a century against Australia in 2019.

Chasing a target of 281, Pakistan made a stuttering start when opener Saim Ayub was removed for just five by Jayden Seales in the third over.

Abdullah Shafique (29) and Babar Azam (47) steadied the innings, with the latter sharing a 55-run partnership with captain Mohammad Rizwan.

Rizwan’s fifty

Rizwan went on to notch up his 16th ODI half-century before falling for 53 to Shamar Joseph. At 180 for 5, the match was finely poised — until debutant Nawaz joined Hussain Talat to produce a calm and calculated, unbeaten 104-run stand for the sixth wicket, guiding Pakistan to a five-wicket triumph.

Nawaz, who was handed a lifeline after being dropped early in his innings, remained unbeaten on 63 from 54 deliveries, including five fours and three sixes.

Talat provided steady support, finishing on 41 not out from 37 balls, striking four boundaries and a six, as Pakistan reached their target in 48.5 overs.

Shaheen’s bowling

Earlier in the day, the West Indies were dismissed for 280 in 49 overs. Evin Lewis top-scored with 60, skipper Shai Hope made 55, while Roston Chase chipped in with 53.

A late flourish from Gudakesh Motie, who struck 31 off just 18 balls, lifted the hosts to a competitive total.

Pakistan’s bowling was led by left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi, who claimed 4 for 51. Naseem Shah took 3 for 55, while Saim Ayub, Sufiyan Muqeem and Salman Ali Agha all picked up a wicket apiece.

The victory gives Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the series, with the second ODI set to take place on Sunday.
