UNITED NATIONS: At a special ceremony held at the UN headquarters in New York to mark the International Day of Nowruz, Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram addressed the world’s pressing challenges while emphasizing the need for justice for Palestinians suffering in war-torn Gaza.
Ambassador Akram highlighted the significance of Nowruz beyond celebration, noting it as a time for reflection and solidarity. He called upon attendees to remember the plight of Palestinians amid ongoing conflict, advocating for peace and justice for all.
The event, sponsored by Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, showcased the unity and shared values of diverse communities.
Quoting the celebrated Pakistani poet Nasir Kazmi, Ambassador Akram captured the essence of Nowruz as a festival of hope, joy, and blessings. He underscored its universal appeal, uniting communities across Asia and Europe through art, music, literature, and customs.
Ambassador Akram also shared a message from the Pakistan Prime Minister, extending greetings to Nowruz observers and emphasizing the festival’s role in promoting cultural synergies and inclusivity.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s cultural heritage, Ambassador Akram highlighted the deep connection between Nowruz and the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. He noted the festival’s significance in regions like Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan, where communities gather to celebrate.
Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to peace and reconciliation through Nowruz celebrations, cherishing it as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. By promoting values of harmony and solidarity, Pakistan aims to foster peace within its borders and beyond.
Ambassador Akram concluded with a poignant excerpt from the poem “Nowruz” by renowned Pakistani poet Parveen Shakir, symbolizing the anticipation and hope associated with the arrival of spring.
