ISLAMABAD: A strong westerly weather system is currently influencing northern and western Pakistan, bringing rain and snowfall to several regions, and is expected to persist until at least December 18, 2025, according to official forecasts.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued advisories urging residents and travelers to take precautionary measures.

The system, which moved into the country over the weekend of December 13–15, is forecast to cause widespread precipitation and a noticeable drop in temperatures across much of Pakistan.

In the northern areas, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, moderate to heavy snowfall is expected in mountainous regions, raising the risk of road blockages and temporary closures on key routes.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper districts such as Kohistan, Chitral, Swat, and Malam Jabba are likely to experience rain, strong winds and heavy snowfall, potentially disrupting daily life and travel.

Punjab and Islamabad are forecast to see intermittent rain and overcast conditions, with districts including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Sialkot affected. Dense fog remains a concern in the plains of Punjab and KP, where visibility issues have already led to intermittent motorway closures.

In Balochistan, light rain and snowfall are expected in northwestern and hilly districts, including Quetta and Ziarat, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

Authorities have warned of several potential impacts. Snowfall in hilly areas is likely to disrupt road connectivity, prompting officials to advise tourists to avoid unnecessary travel to mountainous regions. The wet spell is also expected to intensify cold conditions, particularly after the system moves out.

However, the incoming rain may provide temporary relief from persistent smog and fog in urban centers. In agricultural areas, the precipitation could benefit rain-fed crops, though farmers have been advised to protect sensitive produce from possible frost.

The PMD and NDMA have urged the public to remain alert, follow official weather updates, and comply with safety advisories to minimize risks during the ongoing weather spell.
