ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology (IT) has initiated preparations for the auction of 5G technology in the country, signaling the government’s ambition to introduce high-speed connectivity and digital transformation. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and related departments have received instructions to kickstart the process.
Media reports suggest that the 5G spectrum auction, a significant milestone for Pakistan’s telecommunications sector, is expected to take place by August 2024. This move is poised to not only advance the country’s technological capabilities but also boost government revenue, with millions of dollars anticipated from the auction.
As per available information, mobile companies in Pakistan currently utilize approximately 367 MHz of spectrum. The forthcoming auction is set to substantially augment this volume, increasing it to over 600 MHz.
Mobile Operators Readiness to Acquire 5G
However, it has been reported that local mobile operators are facing economic challenges that may impact their readiness to acquire 5G licenses. The continuous devaluation of the Pakistani Rupee against the Dollar and the need for technology infrastructure upgrades to support the 5G spectrum have contributed to this hesitation.
Caretaker Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, Dr. Umar Saif, had previously expressed optimism about launching 5G services within 10 months. The recent discussions between Dr. Saif and the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Maj Gen (R) Hafeezur Rehman, centered around telecommunications matters, the impending 5G auction, and spectrum allocation.
