RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s fragile batting lineup crumbled on Day 4 of the second Test in Rawalpindi, leaving South Africa just 68 runs away from leveling the two-match series and sealing a dramatic finish to an enthralling contest.
After trailing by 71 runs in the first innings, Pakistan were bundled out for 138 in their second innings, undone by South Africa’s spinners on a turning pitch. Simon Harmer was the chief destroyer with a brilliant 6-50, while Keshav Maharaj claimed 2-38 as the hosts’ resistance evaporated within two sessions.
Resuming at 94-4, Pakistan’s hopes rested on skipper Babar Azam, who reached a fluent 50 before being trapped lbw by Harmer. The off-spinner then tore through the middle and lower order, removing Mohammad Rizwan (18) and Noman Ali (0) in quick succession. A brief stand between Salman Ali Agha (28) and Sajid Khan (13) offered some resistance, but the collapse resumed soon after.

Earlier, South Africa’s lower order had rescued their side to 404 in reply to Pakistan’s 333, led by Senuran Muthusamy’s unbeaten 89 and Kagiso Rabada’s quickfire 71. Debutant Asif Afridi starred for Pakistan with 6-79, showcasing impressive control and variation.
Pakistan’s first innings featured strong contributions from Shan Masood (87), Saud Shakeel (66), and Abdullah Shafique (57), but Maharaj’s 7-102 ensured the hosts couldn’t post a dominant total.
As the Test heads into its final day, South Africa’s target of 68 appears straightforward on paper, but the Rawalpindi pitch — offering sharp spin and variable bounce — could make even a modest chase a tense affair.
With everything to play for, Pakistan’s bowlers face a final, desperate push to keep the series alive — while South Africa eye redemption and a series-levelling win.
