Pakistan, Bangladesh Vow to Deepen Defence Ties

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir on Thursday met with Bangladesh Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan where the two sides underscored the importance of strengthening professional collaboration, training exchanges, and defence ties between the Armed Forces of the two countries.

According to Pakistan’s military media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), during the meeting at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, matters of mutual interest, regional security dynamics, and avenues for enhancing bilateral defence and military cooperation came under discussion.

Bangladesh Air Force Chief praised the professionalism of the Pakistan Armed Forces and appreciated their contributions towards regional peace and stability.

During the meeting, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to fostering enduring defence relations with Bangladesh, the ISPR said.

“The meeting concluded reflecting the longstanding and strong bonds between the two brotherly countries,” the statement said.

The meeting took place a day after Pakistan’s Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu and BAF chief Hasan Mahmood ‌Khan held talks on the possible procurement of ‌the JF-17 Thunder jet in Islamabad.

According to ISPR Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) chief also held a meeting with the Pakistan Naval Chief, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, and discussed strengthening defence cooperation.

“During the meeting, matters of mutual professional interest, evolving regional security paradigm, and avenues for further strengthening bilateral defence cooperation were discussed,” the statement said.

The Naval Chief highlighted Pakistan Navy’s commitment to regional maritime peace and stability through its various initiatives.

​Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan acknowledged the high professional standards of the Pakistan Navy and expressed his desire to enhance collaboration between the two brotherly nations’ armed forces.

“The dignitaries agreed on the importance of increasing the frequency of high-level exchanges and joint training exercises to foster greater synergy,” ISPR added.

​Pakistan and Bangladesh have drawn closer since 2024, following the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who left for India amid a violent uprising.

Relations between Dhaka and New Delhi have been further strained as India has not responded to repeated requests for her extradition.
