ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Bangladesh have agreed to expand bilateral cooperation across diverse sectors and within multilateral forums, signaling a mutual desire to build a forward-looking partnership for the benefit of their peoples.

The understanding was reached during a telephone conversation between Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, and Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalil Ur Rehman, said a statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office on Sunday.

During the call, Deputy Prime Minister Dar congratulated Dr. Rehman on his recent appointment as Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister.

The statement added that both leaders expressed a strong desire to further strengthen bilateral relations, guided by a shared vision of promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

Recent engagements between Pakistan and Bangladesh indicate a noticeable warming of bilateral ties.

Both sides have expressed interest in expanding cooperation in trade, education, cultural exchanges, and collaboration within multilateral forums, reflecting a shared intent to build a more forward-looking relationship.

In a significant development, Ahsan Iqbal, Pakistan’s Minister for Planning, travelled to Bangladesh to attend the oath-taking ceremony of Tarique Rahman as Prime Minister of the country.

During his visit, he also met with senior Bangladeshi political leaders and officials to discuss strengthening bilateral economic cooperation, enhancing connectivity, and promoting greater people-to-people engagement.

The visit underscores a renewed diplomatic push by both Islamabad and Dhaka to overcome historical sensitivities and advance practical cooperation for the benefit of their peoples.
