Pakistan, Azerbaijan Agree to Strengthen Trade, Energy and Defence Ties

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif holds a meeting with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in China

ISLAMABAD:  Pakistan and Azerbaijan have reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, energy, connectivity, defence, education, and people-to-people exchanges.

This came during a meeting between Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin, China, on Monday.

The two leaders have expressed satisfaction over the growing momentum in their bilateral ties.

PM Sharif congratulated President Aliyev on the signing of the historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, marking a significant step towards lasting peace and stability in the South Caucasus.

They also reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, energy, connectivity, defence, education, and people-to-people exchanges.

The two sides stressed the value of regional connectivity projects and enhanced cooperation under multilateral frameworks, including the SCO, to promote regional prosperity and integration.

They also exchanged views on emerging global challenges and agreed to continue close coordination in relevant international forums.

President Aliyev expressed his condolences over the loss of lives and property caused by the ongoing floods in Pakistan and affirmed that the Government and people of Azerbaijan stand in solidarity with Pakistan during this difficult time.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended an invitation to President Aliyev to visit Pakistan in the near future.

Chief of the Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, was also present in the meeting.
