COLOMBO: Pakistan avenged their famous 2024 T20 World Cup upset by securing a commanding 32-run victory over the United States of America at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) on Tuesday.
A powerful batting display followed by a disciplined bowling performance ensured the Green Shirts claimed a crucial win in Group A of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Batting fireworks set up formidable total
After being asked to bat first, Pakistan posted a formidable 190 for 9, led by a spectacular 73 off just 41 balls from opener Sahibzada Farhan. His innings, featuring six fours and five sixes, provided the early momentum. He was well-supported by the ever-reliable Babar Azam, who scored a fluent 46 off 32 deliveries.
The innings received a vital late boost from Shadab Khan, who smashed 30 off only 12 balls. For the USA, Shadley van Schalkwyk was the standout bowler, claiming an impressive 4 for 25 in his four overs.
A near flawless display from the spinners to guide Pakistan to their second victory in #T20WorldCup 2026 👌

USA chase falters despite valiant effort
In reply, the USA showed fight but could never match the required run rate. Opener Shayan Jahangir top-scored with a brisk 49 off 34 balls, while Shubham Ranjane provided a late flourish with a quickfire 51 off 30 deliveries.
However, Pakistani bowling attack kept taking wickets at regular intervals, preventing any major partnership from flourishing. Spinners Shadab Khan (2/26) and Usman Tariq (3/27) were particularly effective in applying pressure during the middle overs, derailing the American chase.
Comprehensive win seals redemption
The USA ultimately finished at 158 for 8 in their 20 overs, falling well short of the target. The 32-run margin was a comprehensive one, allowing Pakistan to bury the ghosts of their shock Super Over loss to the same opponents in the 2024 tournament. The win significantly boosts Pakistan’s position in the group, while the USA will need to rebound quickly in their remaining fixtures.
Match Summary
Pakistan: 190/9 in 20 overs (Sahibzada Farhan 73, Babar Azam 46; Shadley van Schalkwyk 4/25)
USA: 158/8 in 20 overs (Shubham Ranjane 51, Shayan Jahangir 49; Usman Tariq 3/27, Shadab Khan 2/26)
