NEW YORK: Pakistan has called on the UN Human Rights Council to set greater attention on human rights violations in ‘UN-recognized disputed territories’ — clearly meaning Palestine and Kashmir– to address the multiple challenges and miseries facing the people there, particularly those under foreign occupation.
“Such conditions often lead to draconian law by occupying forces, who exploit their control to evade answerability, limit freedoms, as well as suppress movements for self-determination,” Pakistani delegate Saima Saleem told the UNGA on Friday, while underlining that the 47-member Council upholds its resolve to protect and promote human rights.

Taking part in a debate on the annual report of the President of the Geneva-based HR Council, Saima Saleem, a counselor in the Pakistan Mission to the United Nations, stated that the plight of populations living under foreign occupation required greater focus as they face violations of basic rights, including the denial of self-determination, fundamental freedoms and dignity.
