RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Army’s Urban Search and Rescue Team has received special recognition from the Turkish government for their relief activities during the quake crisis in Turkey, local media reported on Wednesday.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan conferred a special award on the rescue team at a special function held in Ankara.
Pakistan Army Team Honoured in Turkey
The strips of Turkiye’s southeast saw devastating earthquake on Feb. 6, killing over 50,000 people, flattening cities and towns, and leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless.
After the deadly quake in the brotherly country, Pakistan was the first country to dispatch a team to assist the local people and administration in rescue operations to save lives.
The Pakistan Army Urban Search and Rescue team comprising thirty-three members, took part in the rescue and relief activities, which continued for more than 17 days.
The team carried out search at 91 localities and rendered services at 39 different areas. It rescued 8 people, including kids, from the debris.
In addition, the Pakistan team also rescued 5 other people with the support of other rescue teams in the quake-hit areas of Turkey. The Pakistan team also recovered over 138 dead bodies from the debris and handed them over to authorities in Turkey.
