ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army and Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts have launched relief operations in Ghizer district after flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall and cloudbursts devastated parts of the region, officials said on Saturday.
Pakistan Army helicopters delivered relief goods, medicines, and other essential supplies to flood victims cut off from surrounding areas, local administration said.
Medical teams set up a camp to provide immediate treatment, while seriously injured people were shifted to a field hospital for specialised care.
Flood victims expressed appreciation for the timely intervention of the Pakistan Army and Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts.
“The armed forces stand by the nation in this hour of difficulty,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed that at least 11 people had died in Gilgit-Baltistan, most of them in Ghizer, where the floods also destroyed agricultural land, crops, and a vital bridge, isolating nearly 15,000 residents.
The disaster forms part of a wider monsoon calamity that has left more than 344 people dead across northern Pakistan in the past 48 hours.
