ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday announced the playing XI for the first Test against Bangladesh, set to commence at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium (RCS) on August 21. Shan Masood will captain the team, with Saud Shakeel serving as vice-captain.

The selected squad features a strong bowling attack, with four pacers included: Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Khurram Shehzad, and Mohammad Ali. The rest of the lineup comprises Abdullah Shafique, Saim Ayub, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Salman Ali Agha.

This Test series is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25. The first Test will run from August 21 to 25, while the second Test is scheduled to be played from August 30 to September 3.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s head coach Chandika Hathurusingha expressed confidence in his team’s preparations and readiness for the series.

Speaking at a media briefing, Hathurusingha acknowledged the challenges posed by Pakistan’s bowling attack and the conditions at the Pindi Stadium. “We are prepared for whatever challenge Pakistan throws at us,” he said. “The Pindi pitch appears favorable for both fast bowling and batting. Considering Pakistan’s selection, we have also developed a strong contingent of fast bowlers.”

Hathurusingha highlighted the strategic decisions made by the Bangladesh team, including the inclusion of all-rounders Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraj, who offer valuable spin options. “We expected Pakistan’s wickets to be different from Bangladesh and selected spinners based on merit, not just conditions,” he noted.

The coach also expressed his appreciation for the support provided by the PCB, noting the positive experience of Bangladesh’s A-team playing in Lahore and the excellent facilities available. “We are pleased with our preparations and look forward to the challenge,” Hathurusingha said.

Hathurusingha acknowledged concerns about Bangladesh’s batting but remained optimistic about improvements, highlighting Shakib’s enhanced fitness and form, along with the potential of the team’s young fast bowlers. He also praised Mushtaq Ahmed, a new addition to the Bangladesh coaching staff, for bringing valuable global experience to the team.
