UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan and Saint Lucia solidified their diplomatic ties in a modest ceremony held at the Pakistan Mission to the United Nations on Tuesday.
Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, and his Saint Lucian counterpart, Ambassador Menissa Rambally, formally established this bond by signing a joint communiqué on behalf of their governments.
During the event, Ambassador Akram highlighted the history of collaboration between the two nations in various international arenas, particularly within the Commonwealth. He emphasized that formalizing relations would facilitate expanded cooperation in trade, commerce, politics, and tourism. Notably, he underscored the shared passion for cricket between the peoples of Pakistan and Saint Lucia, expressing anticipation for strengthened people-to-people connections and the exploration of tourism opportunities.
Ambassador Rambally echoed Ambassador Akram’s sentiments, expressing her delight at the commencement of this significant chapter in bilateral relations. She also acknowledged the honorary Pakistani citizenship bestowed upon former West Indies cricket star Darren Sammy, a native of Saint Lucia, who often praised Pakistan’s hospitality.
Grateful for the ceremony hosted by Ambassador Akram, she expressed humility at his generous remarks and reiterated the existing strong relationship between Pakistan and Saint Lucia. She viewed the formalization of diplomatic ties as a platform to further enhance this partnership.
The ceremony was attended by Ambassador Usman Jadoon, deputy permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, along with officers from the Pakistan Mission and a diplomat from the Permanent Mission of Saint Lucia.
