Pakistan and Iran Set Target of $5 Billion Bilateral Trade in Next Five Years

ISLAMABAD: As part of a five-year trade cooperation plan for 2023-2028, Pakistan and Iran have set a target of $5 billion to boost their bilateral trade.

In a joint press conference, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, alongside his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian, unveiled the strategic five-year trade cooperation plan. The plan intends to eliminate obstacles hindering bilateral trade, finalize a Free Trade Agreement, and create robust connections between the private sectors of both countries.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that these steps would establish a durable and thriving economic partnership between Pakistan and Iran. He emphasized their commitment to swiftly operationalize the remaining five border markets by the year’s end.

The meeting also addressed the repatriation of prisoners sentenced as per existing agreements between the two nations. A significant decision was reached to release detained fishermen from both countries and waive any imposed fines for the unseizing of their vessels. He expressed hope that both sides would exchange lists of prisoners.

The issue of human rights violations in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir was also discussed in the meeting. Bilawal Bhutto expressed gratitude for Iran’s steadfast support for the legitimate cause of the Kashmiri people.

Pakistan, Iran Resolve to Play Role for Peace in Afghanistan

In the context of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran pledged their active engagement in promoting peace and stability in the neighboring country, ensuring the well-being and prosperity of Afghan citizens. Both leaders also committed to collaborating in countering Islamophobia and anti-Muslim sentiments.

In his address, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian underscored the paramount importance of enhanced bilateral cooperation in the domains of economy, trade, and tourism. He said that both Pakistan and Iran are wholeheartedly dedicated to increasing bilateral trade to $5 billion and agreed to establish a special economic free trade region along their shared border points.

Amir-Abdollahian further stressed the significance of completing the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline, considering it a project that would serve the national interests of both nations.

He also condemned the recent deadly attack in Bajaur district that left over 63 people dead and extended heartfelt sympathies to the affected people, the Government of Pakistan, and the aggrieved families.

The Iranian foreign minister emphasized supporting the people of Afghanistan, acknowledging that the situation in Afghanistan can have ripple effects on neighboring Pakistan and Iran. He passionately urged religious and humanitarian support for the Afghan people in all circumstances.

The meeting also witnessed the signing of several agreements and memorandums of understanding, cementing the foundation for strengthened cooperation between Pakistan and Iran in various sectors.
