ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been listed among 20 countries at risk of heavy rainfall this year, warns Federal Minister for Climate Change, Senator Sherry Rehman.

She shared the update on Twitter after the Global Information and Early Warning System of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) released its report. The report included Pakistan in the list of countries at risk of heavy rains.

Senator Rehman highlighted that the return of El Nino, a weather system, was forecasted for June this year, and similar predictions had been made locally.

The El Nino phenomenon may lead to severe environmental events worldwide, such as floods, droughts, and threats of malnutrition.

Senator Rehman said, “Pakistan is among the 20 countries where above-normal rainfall is predicted. These 20 countries include America, Turkey, Iran, and others. The third return of the El Niño ocean trend in the last two years is a cause for concern.”

The minister stressed the importance of being prepared to deal with extreme environmental events, as the country is still recovering from last year’s flood disasters.

Rainfall across Pakistan until May 5

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Meteorological Department have expressed concerns about the ongoing rains across the country until May 5, as they may damage standing crops, recently harvested crops, and new sowing.

The government has issued instructions to relevant institutions and the public, including farmers, to take precautionary measures and remain alert. The Minister for Climate Change also highlighted the importance of preparing for natural disasters and promoting environmental sustainability.

Pakistan has a history of natural disasters, including floods, earthquakes, and droughts. The country’s vulnerability to such events can be attributed to climate change and the lack of preparedness and infrastructure to deal with them.

With the recent warning of heavy rainfall, it is essential for the government and citizens to take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.
