Pakistan Alert after Two Deaths from Congo Virus

QUETTA / KARACHI: Health authorities have been alerted after two deaths from the Congo virus were reported in Quetta and Karachi.

According to the health authorities, the initial victim was a pregnant Afghan woman. Gul Naz was brought from Kuchlak with symptoms of the Congo virus and admitted to Quetta’s Fatima Jinnah Chest Hospital.

According to a leading English newspaper, she was bleeding from her nose and mouth, and her blood samples were sent to the laboratory, which confirmed the virus disease.

Dr Zubair Ahmed of the hospital said, she could not survive and died on Sunday morning.

He confirmed that was the third death from the virus in the last ten days. He said, “In the past 4 months, four citizens have died of Congo virus.” All disease patients had travelled to Afghanistan.

One death in Karachi

The Sindh health department confirmed the death of a man in Karachi. The deceased, Mohammad Adil of Liaquatabad, was a meat seller.

“Initially, he developed the headache and fever on April 30, which intensified two days later,” a health department official said adding tha he was taken to the private hospital where he remained under treatment for a day. The victim later had episodes of nasal bleeding and died.

The official said the patient was first tested for malaria and dengue, but the results were negative.
