ISLAMABAD: Acting President Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation with Iran in trade, security, culture, and education.
He noted the deep-rooted historical, religious, and cultural ties between Pakistan and Iran, expressing that the people of Pakistan hold great respect and affection for their Iranian counterparts.
The Acting President made these remarks during a meeting with Dr. Reza Amiri Moghadam, the Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan, at Aiwan-e-Sadr.
During their meeting, Gilani highlighted that both countries are active members of various international and regional forums. He stressed the need to fully utilize the existing cooperation to enhance connectivity between Pakistan and Iran, as well as with the wider region.
The Ambassador acknowledged that Pakistan was Iran’s fifth-largest trading partner last year and stressed the importance of exploring ways to increase bilateral trade to $10 billion.

Addressing the volatile regional situation, the Ambassador mentioned the ongoing acts of genocide in Lebanon and Gaza. He praised the Government of Pakistan for convening the All Parties Conference (APC) on October 7, 2024, noting that it could serve as a model for the Islamic world in supporting the Palestinian cause. The Acting President reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to this support.
Gilani also underscored the significance of enhancing people-to-people connections, including the exchange of parliamentary delegations, to further strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two nations.
The Acting President expressed gratitude to the Iranian government for its warm hospitality towards Pakistani Zaireen visiting Iranian religious sites each year, recognizing the deep love and affection shown by the Iranian people during the spiritual journeys of Pakistani pilgrims.
